The Nimble Fingers Series: Felting with Gina Alvarez workshop.

There is still time to register for “The Nimble Fingers Series: Felting with Gina Alvarez” workshop. The workshop will take place on Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. Participants will learn the basics of wet felting. The cost to participate is only $10.00, but spaces are going fast so call by Thursday to register for this GREAT (and
affordable) workshop! Call 314.727.6266 to register.

The Nimble Fingers Series is a grouping of workshops aimed at children and their families. The workshops will introduce participants to a variety of textile materials and techniques.

This series of workshops is presented in conjunction with the Innovations in Textiles 8 symposium. Between the months of August and November, over 20 local galleries and organizations are coming together to present work that explores the contemporary applications of fiber in artmaking. The galleries and organizations are presenting
exhibitions, lectures, workshops and artist talks. For more

The Nimble Fingers Series will run throughout the On the Bias Exhibition Series. The workshops are presented every other Thursday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. There is a $10 fee to participate. There is no formal registration process but we ask that you call Hannah Montford at 314.727.6266 to reserve your spot for the workshop.

Upcoming Nimble Fingers Series Workshops:

October 22nd, 2009- Crocheting with Ron Foreman and Corrine Horton
6:30 to 8:30 pm
We will be demonstrating single stitch and chain stitch crochet using a K Hook with Simply Soft Eco Medium Weight (#4) yarn to create asymmetrical scarves and winter hats. The asymmetrical scarves are done without pattern and are easy and simple to create using
approximately 3 skeins of yarn in two complimentary colors. The hats are simple single stitch using two skeins of yarn to create a blended
color look.

November 5th, 2009- Organic Dyeing with Erin Cork
6:30 to 8:30 pm
Explore the potential of the organic dyeing process on silk fabric. The organic dying processes that will be introduced provide a safe, nontoxic and sustainable way to apply color to fabric. Utilizing spices such as turmeric, food stuff such as onions, red cabbage and berries and naturally occurring processes such as rusting, a variety of hues and tones can be achieved. Students will have the opportunity to set the dying process in motion and after the workshop see the
results.

Bad broker behavior

I just had a broker (who pretended to be someone just looking to buy) ask me to show him properties and then when I met him there he then disclosed he was a broker…..why would a broker need another agent to show him a listing?? Because this broker is too cheap to pay the MLS dues that agents and brokers pay to view properties listed in the MLS. He also didn’t appear to know his duties or the ins and out of Missouri law. Do people really hire someone like that to represent them?? If you have a broker that doesn’t have access to MLS and can’t show you properties & appears clueless as to the how and why of things….run in the other direction as fast as you can!!!

The Missouri Fiber Artists – in celebration of Innovations In Textiles 8 – are hosting a fantastic lecture at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild on Thursday, September 17th at 7 pm. This lecture is bound to be stimulating. Please join the Missouri Fiber Artists, Judy Coates Perez and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild this Thursday at 7 pm, we would love to see you here.

Judy Coates Perez, an international award winning textile artist well known for her highly detailed, colorfully painted whole cloth quilts, left her native New England in her teens to travel with her parents. Together, they toured the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala. Shortly thereafter, she studied in Northern California, Japan and Los Angeles
where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. She has claimed no less than fourteen cities as her home.

Judy believes that all the places she has lived have in many ways taken up residence in her and manifest in the diversity of her work. Exploring themes drawn from folklore, history and nature, she enjoys working in a variety of media. Often blending quilting skills with techniques
drawn from her graphic arts background, she uses textile paints, dyes, inks, acrylic powders, and artist’s pencils on her fabric as well as sewing metal into her mixed media pieces.

This creative restlessness perfectly mirrors her life experience. Judy has written numerous articles for Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors magazines and has been a guest multiple times on the new Quilting Arts PBS television program.

Please join us Sunday, August 30th, for a Membership Party at the Artists’ Guild from 1pm to 4pm.

The day will begin with Bill Vann, President of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s Board of Governors, detailing his vision for the future of the Artists’ Guild.

Following Mr. Vann will be an introduction to the Artists’ Guild Staff: Bryan Walsh, Graphic Designer, Hannah Montford, Education Director and Grant Writer, Gina Alvarez, Gallery Director, Mary Schomaker, Director of Finance and Davide Weaver, Executive Director.

There will also be introductions to the Section Leaders and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s Board of Governors.

At 2:30, listen to a Gallery talk by artist William Lobdell, whose exhibit Modern Rubbish is currently on display in the first floor Galleries.

From 3pm to 4pm, enjoy the sounds of Barefoot Jones (Resident Artist Greg MacNair’s band).
